"You don't have to be aggressive to be strong. I like the idea that you can take someone's negative energy and redirect it. That applies to many things in life." - Parent

Aikido is many things to many people but core benefits enjoyed by all include:

  • Fun!
  • Physical Fitness
  • Self Discipline
  • Self Esteem
  • Friends
  • Courage
  • Cooperation
  • Coordination
  • Self Control

At the Shuharikan we focus on cooperation - not competition
Working in a friendly and effective manner you'll learn Aikido stances, rolls, holds and throws
No experience necessary!

Although seasonal courses typically are six to eight classes in length, we welcome newcomers starting at any time, and propate course fees.

At each session, students are provided with a lesson plan outlining the techniques, activities, and thoughts of the day. Typically a quote or poem will be introduced to tie together notions of thinking, acting, and play as associated dimensions of learning. Some Japanese terminology is taught too. Frequently there will be assignments to work on with parents at home during the week. The lesson plan here is typical.

The pace is brisk but appropriate for the ability levels of the students in the class. No prior Aikido or martial arts experience is necessary to be able to keep up with the class.

"Aikido helps our kids become confident in their physical abilities and is an activity that they share with their dad." - Parent

Girls

The instructors teach with a view toward improving the students’ self-confidence and self-esteem as well as their physical capabilities. After a few weeks in class, the kids gain an increased sense of balance, strength, and flexibility.

Parents are encouraged to attend and participate!
